Tired :(

4 08 2010

At the moment I can barely keep my eyes open…and in fact after having just arrived home from work I feel like just laying down to sleep. What’s the reason for this you might ask? Well, yesterday I went to a roof top BBQ at a friend of the family’s house (Mary Rose). It was a small gathering of around 15people…mainly M’Rose’s husband, children and gfs, her brother and family, her mum/dad and an uncle, my mum, Bernard and myself.

We arrived there at about 8:30pm, and had some appetizers whilst playing JENGA!…which I won each time, thanks to Jean Paul being the person next in line after me 😀 Then we went onto the big table to eat…MMMM. It was an enjoyable evening with a breeze blowing, the Lija Fireworks in the vicinity (close enough to see…but far away enough to not be bothered by the noise) and a nice company.

However we only left there at about midnight (at 11:45…when we decided to leave, mum remembered that she had to check something she had sent MRose’s son by email…to see if he received it well…GRRRRR. This meant that I slept at about 1am…and then although my alarm clock was at 7:20am (normally it is at 7am…but I moved it to later…since I knew that I would be tired…but Alas…at 6:30am I wove up…5.5hours of sleep is NOT ENOUGH for me L

However I’ve got things to do…will tell you soon :D…and hopefully off to sleep soon!

Denmark here I come!

2 08 2010

Or here I leave actually :D…My mum had bought tickets to go to Denmark to meet my sister and her boyfriend at his parent’s house followed by some time in Copenhagen. I did not buy the tickets before hand since I did not know the details of my PhD..

However I had bought the ticket Malta-Billund tickets some time ago since there were ‘relatively’ cheap Ryanair tickets some time after my mum bought them. However since I am coming back through Copenhagen, I was hoping to wait. My mum bought tickets with Norwegian Air. However by the time I went to buy them, they had skyrocketed in price…surprisingly the August tickets are MUCH CHEAPER than the September tickets…something I cannot understand. I was hoping that once August starts, the September tickets go down again…but to no avail. Therefore today I bought my ticket to come to Malta…however I will be flying AirMalta through Munich…it will take longer…but it is around 100Eur cheaper…so who cares…and I only have a 1.5hour difference between 1 flight and the next…so not much waiting 😀 WEEEEE…in addition it will not be a low cost airline…so I could more easily bring the laptop I should hopefully soon buy!

DENMARK!!…here I come!

Dublin Bublin Day 3: Uni Visit

31 07 2010

On day 3 of our visit, came the main reason for our visit to Dublin. After Breakfast we caught the bus to get to DCU (Dublin City University), the place that will hopefully be home for the next 3 years.

We managed to make our way all right, and managed to stop at the right bus stop aaaaaaa…the buses in Dublin are similar to those in Malta, whereby the stops do not have names which are announced. Therefore you have to rely on the driver’s and other passenger’s help.

We reached the reception area, where I had to meet my supervisor and my mum left. She was not coming for the meeting obviously enough. Instead she walked around the Uni, and read a book :D.

On meeting my supervisor, she proceeded to take me on a mini tour. However I informed her that I had organised one myself later on in the day, and therefore we could proceed with our actual job! We went to her office, finalised my application to the University (I have been accepted to th programme, but I still have not been accepted to the University, although this is (hopefully) just a formality).

She showed me where I might have an office (it will be shared, but I am still excited at the prospect, as all other students generally do not get office space…just a desk in the lab…however since I will be registered in two different schools/faculties…I can have the privilege of having office space…hopefully).

We then went for a coffee, where I met my second Supervisor and another person involved in the project. It was funny that my supervisor and the other guy, who have known each other for some years now, realised they have sisters living in London very close to each other (they use the same corner baker and tube stop), and children the same age…therefore they are likely to know each other…I will hopefully find out sometime :D. I enjoyed the informal chat 😀

After coffee, we went to the NCSR where me and my supervisor were given a tour of the site by the centre manager. I will be doing some lab work in the centre, and therefore I was excited to see where I will be working. In addition, the centre is doing some very impressive research, and I was happy to learn about what they do.

After this, we went to the lab (in another building…since I will be working in two labs…this lab is the sort of student lab, where I will be doing most of the preparations etc), and we met three other PhD students and a Post Doc who are working there, and I will probably spend a lot of time with them. They showed me what they are doing and we all left for lunch. My second supervisor and the other guy also joined use there.

I really enjoyed talking to the students who were really nice, and ready to answer questions weeeeeee. After lunch we all went for a walk around the park (except for two students who had to go back to see to their experiments). It is a really nice park just next to DCU. I hope I get to go walking there sometime :D.

After this, it was time for my campus tour. So we left to my meeting for the campus tour. At this point I spotted my mum, and I introduced her to my supervisors. They left and I went on the campus tour. It was really nice that they took the time out to spend time with me, and that the guy who was doing the campus tour, did so just for me.

On he campus tour, we visited the library, the sports centre (WOOOW),  and the Uni accommodation. I really hope to get accommodation at the DCU campus accommodation. I have to wait and see :(. After this the campus tour ended. Me and mum walked a bit round the area and saw some apartments, and left to go back to the city.

I changed into something more comfortable, and back out we went. Had something to eat, went round some shops for the last time, went next to the river, and then back home to sleep. We packed and got ready to sleep our last night.

The next morning, at 4:45am the alarm clock rang (actually at 3:45 am since my mum did the wrong alarm clock time…and then I could not sleep till 4:45am) and we went to catch the bus to take us to the airport, and our adventure was over :(.

Dublin Bublin Day 2: Sightseeing

31 07 2010

Wakey Wakey rise & shine…it is Day 2 of my Dublin Bublin experience. I could not meet my tutor etc on this day since she was not available, and therefore this day was spent sightseeing etc and doing some other things.

After breakfast (Full Irish Breakfast it said on the website…although I have no idea about the difference from an English breakfast…we had bacon, eggs, sausage, baked beans and toast…breakfast cereals were also available), we left to go around Dublin. After doing some ‘errands’, such as checking when the buses leave to the Uni the next day, going to some banks to check about opening a bank account and doing some shopping, we went to our Free Walking Tour. I have been to another New Europe tour in London last year, and have been to a free tour (operated by someone else) in Barcelona. This was my third tour of its kind. I certainly was not disappointed. Out guide knew a lot about Irish history etc. He in fact has a degree in Medieval history if I remember well, and could give us lots of info. The tour took 4 hours (including a short 20min break for coffee in the middle), and not 1 minute was boring! He was willing to answer questions and knew a lot of things. Thank you Gravan.

After this we went to the National Museum of Ireland of archaeology. We were quite tired at this point, so we certainly did not get the full experience. But anyways, we went around, and we will certainly be back!

After this lunch, and back to the hotel (having our hotel so near the centre was great allowing us to just pop in for 10mins, leave some things behind and move on). Then left to do some shopping. After shopping we again went to sit down next to the River Liffey and have a talk.

After this we had a hot choc and an apple pie and off to sleep we went!

Dublin here I come!

13 07 2010

WEEE…last Friday I received confirmation that I have been officially selected for the PhD in Dublin…therefore I decided to go for a visit to the Uni and see the area etc etc :D. Yesterday after some emails back and forth with my supervisor, we decided on the dates and I bought 2 tickets to Dublin weeeeeeeeee (my mum is coming with me :D) i.e. in 2 week’s time I will be in Dublin yeah seeing the Uni (and having a bit of a holiday). Cannot wait to see the lab, my supervisor and the city which will hopefully be my home for the next 3 years. And yes…of course…having a bit of a holiday too :D…Still need to ask for leave etc from work…but will manage to do it 😀

At the moment me and mum are currently looking for accommodation in Dublin, searching on the web for the best prices and service etc :D…yippie! Hopefully by tonight the accommodation will have been booked, so that then all that remains would be to pack and catch the flight 😀
